Three Event Security Trends to Know in 2018

Erin Reeve | | December 18, 2017

In 2017, the events industry was revolutionized by digital wonders (e.g., touch technology, AI, and virtual reality). This year, event technology is predicted to take on a supplementary role as the events industry focuses on getting back to important basics, like event security. In this post, we’ll review three important event security trends to look for in 2018.

Three Event Security Trends to Look for in 2018:

1.Crowd Tracking: In 2017, tragedies like the recent mass shooting in Las Vegas pushed event security to the forefront of the industry and brought to life some important, in-app crowd tracking features (e.g., heat maps, people counters, etc.).

Though an important step towards improving event security, these in-app features require the sharing and storing of personally identifiable information (or information that can identify an individual). Because of this, cyber-security measures must be taken as we continue to watch these in-app features evolve across 2018.

2.Stricter Cyber-Security/Event App Security Measures: As crowd tracking and other security features evolve, you can expect to see a widespread adoption of important event app security measures in parallel. These include:

  • Using SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) to secure data
  • Rejecting data deemed too personal
  • Post-event data purges

3.Drones: Drones were originally created for the military, for defense security purposes. But in 2017, we saw drones used to monitor special events, from the presidential inauguration to the Super Bowl. Drones provide advanced environmental awareness that can help event planners access and control a dangerous situation quickly and effectively. In 2018, we expect to see widespread use of drones by event planners at large events, and for the operational technologies (OI) behind drones to evolve and grow into an even more affordable and accessible solution. Keep in mind that there are regulations and operating rules that govern the commercial use of drones.
