Website Design that Drives Donations

Erin Reeve | Fundraising | April 19, 2017

Non-dues revenue is vital to most associations. Increasing donations or event revenue by even a few percents can make a major difference to an association’s bottom line. In a recent blog post, we outlined this year's top web design trends. This post dives even deeper by outlining the best practices to drive donations on your website.

1. Donate Now Button

Today, convenience plays a key role in a website visitor’s decision to donate (Origin Eight). Placing a highly visible Donate Now button on your website can make contributing online as convenient as possible. To make donating on your website even more intuitive, The Balance suggests placing one on every page of your website - or perhaps in the main navigation menu, like Community Food Share:

2. Your Association’s Story and its Impact

A short story about your association and its impact is crucial to capturing the attention of new website visitors (e.g., potential donors). If you have the stats to back up your story, you can take this a step further by creating an infographic that lets your numbers do the talking. World Bicycle Relief does this simply, but effectively in the graph below.

3. The People You Support

Vandelay Design suggests also including details about who is being served, to show potential donors not only where their money is going, but who will benefit. Adding photos or videos can “put a face to a name” and allow site visitors to emotionally connect with your cause. Not for Sale does a great job of connecting site visitors to the people it supports.

4. Social Media Sharing Buttons

The best way to increase donations on your website is often to increase traffic to your donations page. Having social media sharing buttons on your donations page makes it easy for supporters to share it with their networks (which hopefully includes like-minded individuals who feel inclined to make a donation). Make sure that your donations page contains “share-worthy” content! A great example of share-worthy content is NeverThirst's Facebook video post that tells an emotional story about moms (and families!) that don't have access to clean water.
